Job description and person specification

Job Title: Personal Care Assistant

Reporting to: Employer

Location: Merry Hill Wolverhampton WV4

Rate of Pay: £12.30 per hour

Nature of the job role: A Personal Assistant (PA) is required to support a 12-year-old girl who has Down’s Syndrome in the WV4 area of Wolverhampton.
The PA will support mum with caring for her daughter and will take instructions from mum. My clients Daughter is very loving, very sociable and loves cuddles, she likes crafts and fun activities, and mum likes that you help her with spellings, timetables, and anything else that she is learning at school.

My clients Daughter can be stubborn and determined at times, she can talk fluently but you need to listen or ask her to repeat words you’re unsure of, she does not like loud noises and disabled toilets will need to be used to avoid hand dryers, mum will provide a radar key to access said toilets.

My clients Daughter is registered disabled and has a Blue Badge so easy parking can be used which mum will provide for each session.

The PA will need to be patient and understanding of the individuals needs and training or experience of supporting young people with Down’s Syndrome would be beneficial. She can sometimes display challenging behaviour and needs guidance to ensure her behaviours are appropriate.

Guidance and instructions will be given from Mum to the PA how to respond to any challenging behaviour.

Main Duties:
Personal duties: Assisting with all personal care; My clients Daughter will need support to go to the toilet; she does not acknowledge the feelings that indicate she needs to go for a wee, so she needs to be taken to the toilet every 2 hours, so she does not have accidents around the house or outdoors. She will also need assistance if she’s had a bowel movement due to voidance, however Mum will provide gloves etc in case this happens when with PA.


Social Duties: My clients Daughter loves to go to the park; she likes to go on the swings and slide. She likes to go for short walks. She likes visiting National Trust properties and has a membership which mum will supply when needed with a companion card for up to 2 carers. She likes zoo’s, farms, and painting pottery.

Hours of work:
10 hours each week during ALL school holidays - days and times to be arranged each holiday with mum.

Qualifications:
Clean full drivers’ licence.
Experience of working with children over 10
Knowledge of Down’s Syndrome would be helpful but not essential.
NVQ Diploma Level 3 in Health and Social Care

Skills & Experience:
Successful applicants will require DBS checks & Employment References.
Applicants should have a genuine interest in working with disabled people, be honest and trustworthy, and have a confident nature with the ability to remain calm. Applicants will also be able to demonstrate warmth, compassion, and unconditional positive regard for the disabled person.

This role is funded by the Local Authority and is paid 4 weekly.
