Hours: Full-time - Monday to Friday 9am-5pm

Contract Type: Temporary (3 month contract - possibility to extend)

We are a dedicated organisation committed to supporting individuals who have experienced domestic abuse. Our refuge provides a safe and confidential space for survivors, helping them rebuild their lives with dignity and strength. We believe in empowering individuals and advocating for their rights, offering holistic support during times of crisis.

Role Overview:

As a Domestic Abuse Refuge Worker, you will play a vital role in providing frontline support to individuals (and their children) who have fled domestic abuse. You will ensure that the refuge is a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment, while offering practical and emotional support tailored to each person's needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day support for residents, including emotional support and advice on a range of issues, such as housing, legal options, and financial independence.

  • Develop and implement support plans that meet the specific needs of each resident, focusing on safety, recovery, and empowerment.

  • Offer practical assistance with day-to-day tasks, such as arranging appointments, accessing services, and liaising with external agencies (police, social services, housing, etc.).

  • Facilitate group activities or workshops designed to promote self-care, recovery, and personal development.

  • Ensure the refuge environment is safe, clean, and secure, complying with health and safety standards.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records, ensuring all casework is updated and compliant with legal and organisational requirements.

  • Advocate on behalf of residents, helping them access additional support services or resources.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, external agencies, and local authorities to provide a coordinated response to domestic abuse.

Person Specification:

  • Experience: Previous experience working in a refuge or similar support environment (desirable). Experience in working with vulnerable individuals or those experiencing trauma.

  • Knowledge: Understanding of domestic abuse, its impact, and the challenges survivors face. Awareness of safeguarding practices, legal frameworks, and services available to survivors.

  • Skills: Strong communication and active listening skills. Ability to remain calm and compassionate in challenging situations. Excellent organisational and time-management skills.

  • Attitude: Empathetic, non-judgemental, and committed to supporting survivors in their recovery journey. A team player with a proactive approach to problem-solving.

  • Qualifications: Relevant qualifications in social care, counselling, or support work are desirable, but not essential if relevant experience can be demonstrated.
