The Union Housing Scheme is a long term residential service provided by Calderdale Council for people who have mental health needs based in Halifax. We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed colleague to join our friendly team. The aim of our services is to support our residents and people on recovery, so they are able to lead more independent lives in the community, safely and to the best of their abilities.
You will work with individuals to assist in the assessment of their needs and in developing and implementing planned support. You will be expected to be imaginative and resourceful and will consider change positively. You will need to have an understanding of the issues surrounding supporting the recovery of people who experience a serious mental illness.
Applications are invited from people with experience of mental health issues, social care settings or working in a supportive role with others, who can demonstrate good communication skills and an ability to work both as part of a team and alone without direct supervision.
As a 24hr provider, hours of work will be flexible to provide for the needs of the service, and will include evenings, weekends, bank holidays and sleep-ins when required.
The role involves assisting people, rather than giving direct personal care – but may involve a range of domestic duties. You may also be exposed to difficult situations such as emotional distress and self-injury. As you will be working in people’s homes, you may come into contact with household pets or tobacco smoke. Control measures exist to minimise the risk and impact of this.
If you are interested and wish to know more about Union Housing, please email the scheme manager christian.thompson@calderdale.gov.uk for more information about the role prior to application, this will be particularly helpful if you do not have previous experience of residential work and/or similar roles.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expect all staff to share this commitment. Applicants to posts that are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act will require a DBS (formerly CRB) from the Disclosure and Barring Service before the appointment is confirmed.
